Lieutenant Alexander Cowan of the RAMC initially begun the war by enlisting from his hometown of Penicuik, Scotland, fighting on the Western Front before suffering injuries that necessitated a brief return home in 1915. After his recovery he swapped his infantry role to join the RAMC, finding a place aboard HMHS Britannic, making voyages along the Mediterranean to collect injured soldiers on the Middle Eastern theatre.
