Biography
Temp. Capt. Lawrence Anthony Sterling, 11th Viscount Sterling, RAMC
Born: January 1, 1887
Lawrence Anthony Sterling, 11th Viscount Sterling, was the son of John Sterling, Earl of Kilmartin, and Lady Charlotte Bridgerton Sterling, Countess of Kilmartin. Holding the courtesy title of Viscount Sterling, Lawrence became renowned in his youth as a successful stage actor.
He first gained fame originating the role of John Darling in Peter Pan, establishing a reputation on both the London and American stage. Between 1905 and 1915, his aristocratic background and theatrical popularity earned him the nickname “The Viscount of Broadway.” He starred as Kid Burns in Forty-Five Minutes from Broadway (1906/1912) and later portrayed the title role in Little Johnny Jones (1915).
On May 7, 1915, Lawrence was returning home aboard the RMS Lusitania with his wife, Viscountess Aveline Sterling, his cousin Percy Bridgerton, and Percy’s fiancée Dorothy Taylor when the liner was torpedoed by a German submarine. The Lusitania sank in only 18 minutes. Lawrence, Percy, and Dorothy survived aboard Lifeboat 21, but Aveline tragically perished.
Devastated by her death and unwilling to take human life, Lawrence answered the late-1915 Derby Scheme by seeking a purely humanitarian role. His social standing as a peer helped secure his direct commission as a Temporary Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
His organizational ability, commanding presence, and experience at sea made him an ideal Executive Secretary to Lieutenant Colonel Henry Stewart Anderson, the senior medical officer aboard the hospital ship HMHS Britannic. Lawrence manages patient manifests, official correspondence, and diplomatic logs while also assisting with motor ambulances during chaotic transfers ashore.
A survivor of the Lusitania, he possesses a remarkable calmness in maritime emergencies—though beneath that composure remains a widower carrying the memory of the woman he could not save.
