Alfred Brocklebank was a seasoned White Star Line officer whose career reflected quiet professionalism and skill. Born in Birkenhead, he went to sea at seventeen aboard the barque Lathom, earning his Master’s Certificate in 1900 and his Extra Master’s Certificate two years later—an advanced qualification that few officers held.

He joined the White Star Line in the early 1900s, serving successively on the Runic (1903), Cedric (1906), Canopic (1907), Celtic (1909), and Arabic (1910), rising steadily through the ranks. In 1907, he traveled to New York aboard the Celtic as a passenger en route to join the Canopic in Boston, showing how highly regarded he was by the company. While on the Cedric, he worked alongside future Titanic First Officer William Murdoch.

Appointed Second Officer of the HMHS Britannic in December 1915, Brocklebank was the only officer aboard holding an Extra Master’s Certificate—even Captain Charles Bartlett possessed only the standard Master’s. Early records mistakenly listed a “Brockehurst” in his place, but research confirmed this was a clerical error—Brocklebank served in that position throughout Britannic’s career.

He sailed on all of Britannic’s hospital voyages, from her maiden voyage in December 1915 to her return to service in September 1916.
