Sixth Officer Herbert Welsh is new to the ship, this is his first voyage onboard the HMHS Britannic. Regarded as an expert mariner, his previous ship has been the Cedric.

Born into the naval town of Liverpool, his father was First Mate on the Royal Navy. Inspired by his "Papa" he decided to dedicate his life exclusively to the sea. Aged 18, he visited Olympic at Liverpool on her maiden voyage.
Getting his certifications by 1914, he started his sea life on Leyland Line's Californian. By 1916 he was getting tired of them not promoting him and he decided to apply to join the White Star Line. Due to war inconveniences the standards weren't the same and Welsh got in, being assigned to the Cymric on April 1916, but tragically she was sunk on Welsh's third round trip. After Cymric's demise, he was transferred to the old Teutonic for one roundtrip before being transferred to the Celtic. His service on the Troop ferryng route from Liverpool to Egypt lasted until October 1916, when just after arriving to Liverpool he was told that he was being transferred over the Olympic. But it was brief, since after just another roundtrip as Fifth Officer he was now transferred to the larger H.M.H.S ".Britannic." to be her Sixth Officer.
