Biography

Richard Spencer is a British Royal Flying Corps aviator who served in the western front from 1915 all the way up to mid-1916. Before serving in the military, he was a civilian aviator who frequently competed in air races and air demonstrations. However, when the war broke out, he enlisted in the RFC in order to contribute to the war effort using his skills as a pilot. He started off as a scout aviator flying the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2. in the western front, obtaining information regarding enemy positions. However, after surviving various encounters with advanced german fighter planes, he was transferred to a fighter squadron flying the Airco DH1 until the beginning of 1916. By then, the Airco DH2 had entered service with the RFC to match the advanced german Fokker Eindecker, allowing Richard and his squadron to have a fighting chance to fight for air superiority in the western front. Following the events of 1916, Richard would be recalled back to Britain for reassignment. In the months leading up to November, Richard would undergo further retraining before receiving news that he would be assigned to the fighter squadron in the Mediterranean front. There was a mass military movement going on, which meant that all means were used in order to transport troops to the Mediterranean theatre. As Richard was not able to board one of the troop ships, he was ordered to board the H.M.S. Britannic heading to Lemnos, Greece instead. Upon arrival in Greece, he was to travel to the Palestine region where British forces were pushing towards Palestine, and group with his squadron.
