Lance Carlos McClain was born in Cuba to an American father and a Cuban mother. In late 1912 his parents moved to Glasgow, Scotland so Lance could attend a prestigious academy. Around the same time he met his long time friends Tyler “Hunk” Garrett, a large but gentle cooking prodigy, and Matthew Holt, a genius with modern radio telegraphy knowledge to rival that of Samuel Morse. While at Garrison Academy, Lance decided to study astrology, having seen Georges Méliès’ “Le Voyage dans la Lune” and then having read several of Jules Verne’s novels. When The Great War broke out two years ago, Hunk and Matthew all joined up with the Royal Army Medical Corps, with Matthew and Hunk being sent to the trenches of Belgium where Matthew was unfortunately captured and is now assumed to be deceased. Last year Hunk returned from the frontlines and was assigned to the RAMC staff aboard the HMHS Aquitania writing to Lance to urge him to volunteer to join the RAMC, which he promptly did and after his training was assigned to the newly commissioned HMHS Britannic, sister ship of the ill-fated Titanic. His service aboard the liner lasted from December 1915 to June 1916 when the Britannic was discharged from hospital service. Lance assumed he was to be assigned to the trenches, however was pleasantly surprised when he was assigned back to the Britannic when she was recalled back into hospital service only a month later. This is his story so far…
