Biography
'I did not sleep well again last night. The roar of gunfire and the stench of gas and the wounded fill my dreams. I am still in Ypres, surrounded by the dead. I wonder if these are the same sounds that kept my father up at night when I was a child. Fitz and I used to tell ourselves it was ghosts lurking in our home that kept him awake- I suppose now it was ghosts of a sort that haunted him- though not the sort we could have imagined. Tonight I shall try to think of my mother's stories from when I was last home. I recall the days she sat by my bed and told me of her childhood and early adulthood in India and again and again the story of how she met my father. She read her favourite books to me. They're in my case... perhaps I'll have peace tonight if I read and think of my mother's storytelling.' - The private diary of Jane Elliston, dated October 14th, 1916.
A nurse by profession, Jane enlisted in QAIMNS at the outset of the war. Her acceptance took months as the board requested arduous references alongside detailed proof of education, descent, and citizenship. Two years of service across France and Belgium took its toll, and a recent bout of leave to her family's home in Scotland turned into two months while she battled a fierce influenza. At least, that's what it says on paper. Following her return to service, Jane was assigned to the Britannic's first voyage to Mudros.
Jane keeps to herself. She is sharp and no-nonsense, with all the makings of a future Matron.
