Biography
Private William Joseph Downing was born on the 23rd of June 1895 in the quiet village of Market Bosworth, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as the second child and first son of Gregory (b. 1863) and Esther Downing, née Huntley (b. 1866). His father was the local chemist in the village and from an early age William became interested in the profession and wished to follow his father into the profession. He began attending the University of Cambridge in 1914, hoping to eventually earn his degree in chemistry. Just as he began attending the university, the war known as the Great War broke out. In 1916, during William's sophomore year at Cambridge, the British Conscription Act was passed in Parliament, and as the academic year was coming to a close he was called up for military service. Due to his knowledge of chemicals in relation to the medical field, he was assigned to the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). He was made a hospital orderly and assigned to serve aboard the HMHS Britannic, sister of the famous RMS Titanic. While being assigned to the RAMC spared him from the front lines, it did not insulate him from seeing the effects of the fighting. Aside from his impeccable knowledge of chemistry, he is also a talented pianist, and has performed many times for his fellow RAMC personnel on outbound voyages. As he prepares to board at Southampton, he anticipates this will be another routine hospital ship voyage.
