Biography
Alice McKenzie was born in the autumn of 1894, growing up in a household shaped by a strong sense of duty, order, and traditional expectations. Her family lived a comfortable life just outside London, where her father worked diligently as a senior clerk for a prominent maritime shipping firm. From a young age, Alice was quietly expected to follow the conventional path carved out for women of her social standing—attending to domestic accomplishments, practicing social graces, and eventually marrying well to secure a stable, quiet future. But Alice never quite fit the mold her family envisioned. Beneath her polite compliance lay a sharp, inquisitive mind and a restless spirit. She spent her free time devouring history books and borrowing her older brother’s science texts, fascinated by how the world worked outside her family’s manicured garden. When the Great War broke out in 1914, the predictable, comfortable world she knew completely shattered. Her brother rushed to enlist and was sent to the Western Front, leaving their home shrouded in a heavy, inescapable anxiety. As the war dragged on, Alice found it impossible to stay behind and simply wait for news. Watching the young men of her community march away while she was expected to stay home and knit comforts for the troops drove her to frustration. When the horrific casualties of the Gallipoli campaign began flooding back into England, Alice realized she couldn't remain a bystander. Against her parents’ wishes—who strongly believed that a wartime military hospital was no place for a respectable young woman—Alice walked down to the local recruiting office and volunteered. Lacking formal nursing credentials, she entered the service at the absolute bottom of the ladder, working as a ward maid. She scrubbed stone floors, laundered heavily soiled linens, and ran endless errands at a crowded military hospital in England. She proved to have a strong stomach, a steady hand, and a calm demeanor in the face of suffering, quickly earning the respect of her superiors. When the opportunity arose to join the medical staff aboard the HMHS Britannic for its Mediterranean voyages, Alice immediately applied. Getting accepted onto the magnificent Olympic-class hospital ship felt like a profound responsibility and the chance to make a real difference where the fighting was thickest. For her official registration photo, she dressed in her finest high-necked white lace blouse, wanting to project an image of maturity and absolute professionalism to the board, even if her youthful features still give away just how young she truly is.
