Biography
Jax Felix Kovach was born on 13 October 1889 to Irish parents, although his family immigrated to England at a young age. Though his father was always present when Kovach was a child, he was never truly there for his family in a way that mattered, and Kovachs parents separated by the time he was in high school. For most of his life, Kovach had been a troublemaker and a nuisance to those around him, especially in school. He was even expelled from college due to his behavior. It wasnt entirely out of nowhere, some of stemmed from frustrations he had with his mother, who was handling her divorce very strangely, often comparing Kovach to his father. Trying to make her stop, he confessed something to her that many would prefer to keep private, as he thought it would get her to quit her behavior. But she responded in the worst way possible, berating Kovach and shouting obscenities and insults at him that went on for a long time. At the end of this confrontation, she hugged him. Caught off guard, Kovach pushed her away with more force than he intended, and she collapsed on the ground, and didnt get up. Trying to get as far away from the situation as he could, he used his savings hed earned in a Southampton cafe to buy a ticket aboard the RMS Titanic. By this point in his life - he had already ruined several friendships by not knowing how to handle his emotions. So while on board the ship, he pushed many people away from him, perhaps so they didnt get too close and learn too much. These actions would come back to him though, as, late on the 14th of April, the Titanic struck an iceberg, and two hours later, was at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. Along with it went everyone Kovach had met during the voyage, and try as he did to deny it, they were his friends. A Mr. Anthony Tennyson, and a teenager named Kris were two of Kovachs closest during the trip. Neither made it out, and Kovach suddenly felt awful for saying the things he said to them during the duration of the voyage. What made matters worse is that after the rescue of survivors aboard the Cunard liner Carpathia, Kovach experienced auditory and visual hallucinations - Tennyson laughing behind him, a silhouette, or Kris playing a piano, faintly. All this accomplished was wracking Kovachs mental state even more during an already difficult time. Kovach would talk to, what he assumed to be, ghosts, though he was likely continuing to hallucinate. One evening he was leaning over the Carpathias railing to jump overboard at sunset when a woman, a Ms. Jeanette Jackson, approached him. He managed to vent about everything that had happened over the past few days, and how he had refused to accept the love given to him. Jackson told him that he had survived the tragedy for a reason and that maybe he was being given a second chance to improve, even if it wasnt fair that people like Kris had to die in the disaster. Her words, along with those of a psychic he had met during the voyage, would come to shape Kovach over the following years. He was like a completely different person and was no longer who he once was. This extended beyond just personality and went to his appearance and actions too. He tried not to dominate a conversation, would let other people speak more, would mind manners and stuff like that which he never truly cared about. However, during difficult emotional times, he would occasionally slip up - though it was scare in comparison to what it used to be. And he could never really look at a piano, or a game show, or a striped sweater the same way. But he never gave up on life, his conversation with Jackson affirming he had been spared for a reason, to change for the better. Although Kovach had severed all ties to past connections from school, his past friends Leah, Doug and Abigail, they never stopped trying to talk to him despite how distant he became, and after the tragedy where they learned he was a passenger, they had sent him letters asking if he was okay. Surprisingly he did respond, in long letters that apologized for everything he had said and done to them. Eventually, by the end of 1912, he had reconnected with Abigail who visited Kovach while he was in college completing his education. While in college something else about Kovachs personality changed, he would be more open to activities people didnt view as -masculine- and would often hang out with the women during gatherings. -He- soon became the target of occasional bullying, which, Abigail advised he ignore. It eventually stopped. Although Kovach had never admitted it publically, those close to him could tell he was having a crisis with identity - often wearing androgynous clothing, keeping himself clean shaven, and growing out his hair long. He felt more comfortable like that, and saw no use in trying to hide it from his friends, and, trying to reform himself, wanted to be more -natural- rather than having to put on an act that he didnt care. By 1914, Kovach was fairly well-healed from the scars of the Titanic tragedy. He had graduated college and was doing decently, living in America with Abigail, although he still had PTSD from the tragedy. Communications with their friends in England had not stopped and eventually, Leah said she would be ready to see Kovach in person again. So, with free time now, Kovach and Abigail would head back to England. While there, Kovach attempted to reconnect with his mother, but had learned she was in the hospital now since she was in ailing health - unrelated to being pushed onto the floor, instead a kind of cancer. Abigail told Kovach to visit her, but he admitted he was still afraid of her, and what she would say to him. However, she agreed to go with him so that he wouldnt be alone, and perhaps, his mother wouldnt say anything to him. This worked, and Kovach was able to speak with his mother face-to-face again. Neither could bring up what happened the last time they saw eachother, though they were clearly thinking about it. Once Kovach got back to his apartment with Abigail, he was clearly pretty stressed with emotion from the incident, but come next morning he was feeling better and admitted he needed closure. While things with Kovach were going good, and he had found a stable job, things outside of his control would change. In 1914, war broke out across Europe, and it would be the great war. Kovachs drafting status was initially that of question, people werent sure if he was American, Irish or British, so he was able to avoid it for a few months, before eventually being pulled into the British army. However, after taking one look at him it was deemed Kovach was too quiet and reserved for the military at this stage in his life - he wondered what things wouldve been like if the war broke out in 1911 instead - but that wasn't the case. Instead of being trained as a soldier, he was trained as a medic. Kovach had learnt some things about medicine, but because neither him nor any of his friends were really that experienced in the medical field, his learning process was a bit slower - but in the time of war you have to adjust fast, so by 1915 Kovach was pretty experienced. Abigail followed Kovach most of the places he went as a medic, aswell as being a motivational voice for the troops, and Leah was also displaced as a medic somewhere else. Doug was on the frontlines, and was lost in combat that year. This hit Kovach hard, but there had been time for him to process the last time he lost someone, so it was easier; especially with him accepting the comfort Abigail tried to give to him - when they were stationed at the same posts that was. Though they kept in contact, they saw eachother in person less and less and were often separated. By 1916, Kovach hadnt thought of Titanic for a while. He didnt spend as much time thinking of the friends he made aboard, he was trying his best to move on in a positive way; so he wasnt haunted by it, while having time to reminisce occasionally - and being wrapped up in the war of course left him little free time to think about it. Additionally was a fresh loss, Doug, in comparison to the others he had lost in the past. He was now an experienced medic - not necessarily renowned, just experienced, and saw various stations throughout Europe that year. Coincidentally, in November he would be assigned as a member of the staff aboard the HMHS Britannic - Titanics sister ship, to aide wounded troops on the island of Lemnos after the Gallipolli campaign. He was hardly eager to board the ship, it would reignite alot of old wounds that he had from his time on the Titanic. Things he had said, done, people hed lost...maybe a few positive memories, but mostly negative. But at least he knew now that after reforming himself, there would always be someone he could talk to who would understand and help him through his struggles. So he wasnt as worried as he otherwise may be. Also, he would be preoccupied with the events of the war, and later caring for the wounded troops, aboard, which could serve as a distraction. But either way Kovach knew something would happen between him and the ship on this voyage. A Titanic survivor boarding its sister ship? Something is bound to happen, trauma, acceptance, closure, whatever it may be. Kovach tried to find a way to get Abigail or Leah onboard the ship with him, however they were stationed in other military operations. So he had just sent a short wireless to them wishing luck, and he sent a more detailed letter to Abigail where he spoke of wishing for an end to the war to come soon. He would essentially be isolated aboard Britannic, he wasnt usually assigned to naval operations, and was new, so he hardly was familiar with anyone aboard...or so he thought. Because of his isolation, he took more time to focus on himself than he normally did. If uniform assignments didnt give things away, he would almost have an androgynous appearance, with his orange hair down to his shoulders and falling over his eyes. Almost similar to...well, it may not have been on purpose. But -he- definitely stood out.
