Biography
Alisa (Alya) Mikhailovna Kujou came from a family with some money and got a private education. Born in 1898 she picked up Russian from her father and English from her mother so both languages felt natural to her. She liked books and words and also had this pull toward medicine. That part led her to sign up as a nurse once the war started. It seems she wanted to help even though she kept most feelings to herself. At eighteen she ended up on the hospital ship Britannic working in the Mediterranean. The uniform was the usual navy dress with an apron and the veil that had the red cross. She got used to the long shifts and the supplies they moved around. Wounded men came aboard often and at first the exhaustion around her felt hard to watch. Still she stayed steady and did what was needed. Her way was proud and a bit distant most of the time. She would make a sharp comment now and then instead of saying much else. That cool side hid how much she cared though. By November 1916 she was still out there on the ship doing her part. The whole thing felt like one of those moments that might stay with her later but she just kept going. Some parts of that time get a bit messy to picture clearly.
