SECRET INTELLIGENCE SERVICE SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT FOR AGENT 007 CLASSIFIED; TOP SECRET NOVEMBER, 1916 Bond, Your reports concerning Operation BLACKTHORN have been received and reviewed. The information you have recovered is of considerable importance to the security of His Majestys Government, and I trust you appreciate the gravity of the situation we now find ourselves in. The materials recovered under your direction provide grounds to suspect 006 of intentionally providing the enemy with confidential information related to our deployments across the Mediterranean theatre of war. The nature of these allegations demand discretion. 006 has served for a considerable period, and his experience and access to sensitive information make the possibility of his betrayal a matter of utmost national concern. At present, the evidence, while compelling, is insufficient to establish the full extent of his involvement in these matters. You are hereby ordered to embark aboard the HMHS Britannic for her forthcoming voyage to the Mediterranean. You served in the Royal Navy prior to joining the 00 Program - as Able Seaman Bond, I expect you to serve the sailors aboard the Britannic well. Given her scheduled passage to Mudros, she offers the most direct available means of reaching your destination without arranging a separate, conspicuous passage. Her status as a hospital ship should also afford you a degree of discretion, provided you do not abuse it. Refrain from drawing attention to the true purpose of your journey, and try and maintain a low profile, for once? You will disembark at Mudros to begin the next stage of your mission. Your principal objective is to conduct a thorough investigation into 006, who is currently assigned to Operation ASHFORD in the region. You are to exercise your own judgement in assessing his innocence or guilt. Should 006’ guilt be confirmed, you are to take whatever measures necessary to prevent the further disclosure of confidential information. Circumstance permitting, I would prefer he were returned here to England to answer for his conduct directly - but only if so doing does not farther endanger the security of Allied operations. Remember, Bond - a license to kill is also a license NOT to kill. You have been entrusted with this assignment because I believe you more than capable of carrying it through at this stage in your career, but I must caution you not to underestimate 006. You may find his years of service make him no less dangerous than the enemy he has allegedly chosen to serve. Determine the truth, Bond. See to it that justice is served, whatever form it may take. M, Chief, His Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service
